When you are a working mom, it is so hard to find time to do certain important things with your kids. It has always been a challenge to figure out when to do family devotions and when to gather around the table for a meal during the week. We are just trying to run out of the house and get to school!
I would beat myself up because it was hard to do what my mom did with my brother and I as a stay at home mom. Then I realized that it is ok to think outside the box. And although I may not be able to have my kids draw illustrations of their understanding of the Bible like my mom did with us, I can surely put a kids devotional app on my phone (www.keysforkids.org), plug that bad boy in to my car on the way to school and we all listen to it, then discuss it on the way. Please try this. It has been amazing!
Then at least 3 times a week, I will make us all a plate and just sit down and eat together at night (because usually I’m running around getting stuff together for the next day while they eat). They usually take longer, but if I sit down a few minutes with them, there’s enough time to ask each child about their day, and then scramble around to do this and that.
By taking that small time to munch on something while my kids eat dinner, I just now found out a kid in my youngest son’s class is sort of bossing him around and after much questioning to make sure he was not being bullied, my husband and I gave some advice and then we prayed for God to give him courage to stand up to him (and of course the “big man” -his older brother had to say that he will be walking past his class from now on). I mean that took not barely 20 minutes to just check in with them.
I know these things seem small and I do struggle sometimes with feeling I’m doing an inadequate job, in comparison to all the great full time moms out there, but instead of just saying “I don’t have time for this or that.” I am fighting for some time. In faith, I believe that these little seeds will grow into something meaningful in their lives. Hope these thoughts give some encouragement to my working momma sisters out there. ALSO please subscribe to Working Mother Magazine. It’s not Christian based, but the perspective is from women who really believe in making home and family a priority. The advice, encouragement and emotional support found there has been such a blessing to me (www.workingmother.com). Keep pressing mommas!
Great post about being a working mother! I’m going through that right now. Thanks for posting this!
